Blackfish have been working with Mocean Energy since 2017, helping them design, fabricate, assemble and commission their Blue X Wave Energy Converter that was installed in Orkney in the summer of 2021. Blackfish were responsible for almost the entire mechanical design and structural assessment, which included:
· Design of main structure, mooring points, lift points, and access
· All internal equipment definition and mounting
· Stability assessment and static hydrodynamics
· Design of back-to-back PTO test rig
· Supervision of fabrication and assembly activites, BOM management, quality control
· Definition and leading the wet commissioning at Rosyth Dockyard, including ballasting and leak testing.
“We worked closely with Blackfish since 2017 through front-end engineering, detailed design, build and commissioning of our 40-tonne prototype Wave Energy Converter “BlueX”. Post-commissioning, the device was successfully deployed for testing at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney in 2021. Blackfish proved to be first class structural and mechanical designers with absolute attention to detail – and beyond design, they provided valuable practical support during fabrication, assembly and commissioning of the device, bringing with them their time-served hands-on experience from the marine energy sector. We are pleased to be maintaining a continued partnership with Blackfish as we develop our next generation devices in our journey towards commercialisation.”
